Australian singer-songwriter Jack Colwell has died, aged 34. He died on Thursday and has been mourned by Australia’s music industry as a brilliant musician and loyal friend. Colwell released his first EP, Only When Flooded Could I Let Go, in 2015, including his first single Don’t Cry Those Tears.

He would then go on to be the main support act for musician Sarah Blasko on her 2016 tour, and she produced his debut album Swandream, released in 2020. He also played a sold-out show at the Sydney Opera House in 2016, was director of Sydney community choir Polyphony, and regularly wrote essays for outlets including The Guardian and Kill Your Darlings.
“One of my favourite people in this whole wide world, who possessed the charm of a thousand princes and a musical spirit like no other has passed into another realm,” Blasko said on social media. “Good night darling Jack, changed forever by your presence.” Swandream received critical acclaim, with NME calling the album “an utterly visceral listen with immediate impact”.
“It feels like he’s reached into your chest and grabbed your heart, looking into your eyes pleading us to feel what he feels. “That’s the unmistakable gravity and power that Colwell’s storytelling has.” In a tribute published by the Guardian , music writer Jenny Valentish said Colwell was a “one-man séan.
