Saturday, January 25, 2025 Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane airports are on alert for major disruptions as over 1,000 ground workers strike, potentially impacting international travel. International travelers to Australia should prepare for disruptions at major airports, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, as more than 1,000 Dnata ground workers have launched a strike over an ongoing pay dispute. The industrial action is expected to impact operations at these airports.
To ease the situation, Sydney Airport has committed to assisting airlines, while Qantas has made arrangements for its international flights. Qantas, the national carrier, has assured passengers that domestic services will not be impacted but has implemented measures to safeguard international flights departing from Sydney. Dnata provides ground handling services to up to 20 major international airlines operating in Australia.
Sydney Airport is working proactively with airlines to minimize disruptions and advises travelers to stay updated by following notifications from their carriers. In a related development, Qantas recently resolved a legal dispute involving over 1,800 workers who were wrongfully dismissed during the pandemic. On December 18, Qantas announced that it had reached a deal with the Transport Workers Union (TWU), agreeing to compensate the affected ground workers.
The settlement will create a compensation fund, set to launch in early 2025, to distribute a combined 120 million Australian doll.
