[+] to humans. Long renowned for its crystal-clear water and many idyllic islands, the Maldives draws well over one million tourists each year—but it’s not just humans that can be found exploring the nation’s tranquil shores. The countless coral reefs across the country play host to all sorts of fascinating marine life, with no shortage of dazzling fish and reptiles thriving from Ihavandhippolhu Atoll to Addu Atoll.

The royal angelfish, longnose hawkfish and yellowtail clownfish are just a few of the animals that can be encountered during a routine snorkeling excursion, but few Maldivian species can match the splendor of the manta ray—and to celebrate the legacy of these gentle giants, there’s no better event than the Manta Retreat . Officially taking place from March 17th to March 20th this year, this fauna-focused festival is returning for its fourth annual iteration, officially presented through a collaboration with the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort and the UK-based marine conservation organization Manta Trust . Throughout all four days of the retreat, guests can take part in fascinating educational seminars, with topics spanning from manta ray identification methods to the inner workings of plankton, a diverse type of organism that makes up the bulk of a manta ray’s diet.

Each day, visitors can also look forward to captivating tales from Manta.
