A SUPER fast hot hatchback that can match a £85,000 BMW M3 for speed can be yours for less than £5,000. The tiny motor may be close to 20 years old but can still go toe to toe with the super saloons of today. If speed is what you need then look no further than the iconic VW Golf .

The German giant has pumped out millions of the beloved model in a storied production run dating back to 1974. It was originally conceived as the replacement for the equally famous Beetle but has now carved out its reputation as one of the best and most affordable performance motors on the market. Even brand new, the base model Golf is still only £27,035 but the model's mass production and long history mean there are some cracking deals to be had on the second-hand market.

Now, obviously you won't get the same level of tech or comfort as you might from the Beemer but if you're looking for big power and a little price tag, there aren't many better options. That's not to say there a no mod cons, though, as the Golf comes with climate control, an in-cabin entertainment system and electric windows - the height of luxury in 2006.
