Brief power outages in Davenport were caused by a component failure during scheduled maintenance at a substation, according to a MidAmerican spokesperson. Monday morning, a MidAmerican crew began scheduled maintenance work at a Davenport substation, spokesperson Geoff Greenwood wrote in an email. Crews needed to ensure the substation components were deenergized so crews could perform their work safely.
They isolated one of the two transmission sources that feed the substation to do so. That switching of circuits moved the substation's inflow of electricity to the other source, Greenwood said, to avoid any service interruptions. During that process, a component failed on the other transmission source.
As a result, at 8:55 a.m., about 7,300 Davenport customers were impacted for about 13 minutes.
Some experienced a loss of power while others experienced voltage reduction, Greenwood wrote. MidAmerican restored the original transmission source to restore affected customers, and "are working to address the component failure," Greenwood wrote. Later Monday morning, just after 11:20 a.
m., another component failed on that circuit. It affected about 7,400 customers – largely the same customers who were impacted earlier, though not entirely, Greenwood wrote.
Power was restored about 25 minutes later. MidAmerican did not anticipate any more outages to occur associated with the scheduled maintenance work, Greenwood wrote in an email. MidAmerican has deferred the substation maintenance p.
