A look at one of Belfast’s most significant streets, which has a 19th-century poorhouse at the heart of it Clifton House In January of this year, Belfast City Council signalled its intention to create a register of our historic black ceramic tile street signs so that the remaining few might be protected in some way. These iconic signs are, of course, property of the council, which was forced into action after a number of signs had vanished from walls and subsequently appeared for sale online. Described as “totally unique to the fabric of the city”, these handmade signs date back over 150 years to July 1869 when Belfast Corporation resolved that the Belfast Charitable Society should erect signs on three streets, one of which was Clifton Street.
