1 2 Vadodara: The collapse of the masonry lining and slab over a major storm water drain that goes through the city caused panic in parts of the New VIP Road area. The drain takes water from areas prone to waterlogging to the Vishwamitri river. The storm drain , which was built 23 years ago, begins near the Rajivnagar sewage treatment plant (STP).

It then goes through the New VIP Road, Warasiya, Harni, Hathikhana Road, Tulsiwadi and Bahucharaji areas before ending in the Vishwamitri. Sources said the drain collapsed with a loud noise early on Saturday morning. Residents of societies around it rushed out of their homes to see what had transpired.

They then informed their local councillors and Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials. Elected representatives from the area and VMC officials rushed to the site of the collapse, near Shiv Bungalows, to ascertain the extent of the damage. Panic buttons were pressed as the debris in the drain was blocking the flow of the water.

Many residential societies downstream of the drain would get waterlogged if the drain didn’t carry water. A municipal councillor from the area, Ajit Dadhich, said the cause of the collapse was that the walls the slab stood on had collapsed. “The slab was largely intact, and cutters had to be used to break it up to clear the debris.

The soil in the area tends to cave in and this may be a factor behind the collapse,” he added. Due to the conditions at the site, councillors have demanded that a precast slab be used. “We asked officials to consider this suggestion so that such an incident does not happen again,” said VMC chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry.

Till then, the VMC will clear the debris from inside the drain and leave it open.
