Pune: The irrigation department is looking to curtail the ongoing water release from the Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha canal as most of the ponds in the rural parts are filled to the brim. The collective storage in the four dams in the Khadakwasla circle has reached 28.25 TMC (97%), which is about 1 TMC short of the total storage capacity of 29.

15 TMC. The department said it was maintaining the stock in the dams between 75% and 90% of their individual capacities. “There is a plan to begin discharges from the dams depending on the rainfall in their catchment areas,” an official said.

The water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river was stopped a few days back after a drop in the rainfall activity. Officials from the department said the water availability in the rural areas had improved after heavy spells of rain. “Since the ponds are full, water release into the Mutha canal can also be stopped for a few days now,” the official said.

Khadakwasla’s storage was recorded at 91% of its capacity on Monday. “We cannot keep the dam stocks at 100% all the time, at least till the monsoon-end,” another official said. On Monday, Khadakwasla did not record any rainfall, while Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar recorded less than 7mm of rainfall each.
