Pittsburgh is starting to show encouraging signs of progress. It wasn’t an ideal first half (like always), but the Steelers found a rhythm in the second half to win in blowout fashion for the second week in a row, this time against the struggling New York Jets. Russell Wilson got his first action as a Steeler on Sunday.
The booing that took place towards him in the first half was ridiculous, it’s not like Justin Fields has been doing any better. Things didn’t look good when the Steelers were down 15-6 and the Jets had the ball late in the second quarter. Cornerback Beanie Bishop made the play that changed the momentum though, catching a fantastic interception.
The offense capitalized when they had the chance to make it 15-13 and it was all downhill from there. Wilson had 264 yards passing with two touchdowns against the second ranked pass defense in the NFL. The only time Pittsburgh had a quarterback throw for over 250 yards and 2 touchdowns since Ben Roethlisberger left was Mason Rudolph against the Bengals last year.
The classic Russell Wilson “moon ball” seems to be perfect for a wide receiver like George Pickens. The Jets defense clearly respected Wilson in the passing game, which opened up opportunities in the run game. Wilson did it all without turning the ball over, which apparently was the biggest concern for trying to push the ball downfield more.
Didn’t that feel good Steeler fans? Wasn’t it refreshing not to have to win in a rock fight and barely sque.
