It was a tough contest with scores locked 0-0 at halftime before Shae Muhleisen scored just after the break to give the Steelers a 4-0 lead. Though 20 minutes later the Knights took the lead after Leah Ollerton crossed for a try and Jessica gentle kicked the conversion. The Knights looked destined to go on and win before Wilson broke Novacastrian hearts by diving over for a try with only five minutes to play.
Tayleah Handcock added the two to give the Steelers a bit of breathing room. It was a sweet victory for Steelers coach Jamie Szczerbanik, who guided the team to championship success in his first season in charge of Illawarra. Szczerbanik said the win came down to his team's guts and determination.
"I think the emotion of the whole occasion might have got to both teams as far as performance is concerned. It wasn't the prettiest game but just a determination to play for 70 minutes told in the end," he said. "Personally this is probably up there with one of my greatest achievements being involved in rugby league.
