A stately two-and-a-half storey home at 150 Canora St. in Wolseley is one of those homes, says Eric Neumann of Real Brokers. “The first thing to note about it is that it sits on an oversized 45-foot by 118-foot corner lot, which was huge for a home that was built back in 1913,” he says.

“It’s grander than your average Wolseley home – really, it’s more like a home you would find in Crescentwood. It comes in at just a touch under 3,000 sq. ft.

” Todd Lewys / Winnipeg Free Press At nearly 3,000 sq. ft., the two-and-a-half storey home - which sits on an oversized lot - if filled with features not normally seen in Wolseley-area homes.

Turns out, its grandeur starts at the front of the home and just keeps on going. “It starts off with a beautiful front porch that then transitions nicely into a wonderful entrance that speaks to the home’s more elaborate level of construction and finishes.” Simply put, the home’s entrance is spectacular — in an old-world sense.

“The woodwork is just out of this world — a gorgeous oak closet, piano window above with immaculate oak trim and an original oak door with more hand-cut oak trim to the side and above. You can see the saw cuts in the oak,” says Neumann. “Its quality is just off the charts.

You would have to look long and hard to find wood like that now.” From there, the entrance merges seamlessly with a huge landing area. “Again, you just don’t see this in your average Wolseley home.

There’s plenty of room to move around, which is not always the case. There’s a main floor den to the left, and, of course, a spectacular, original oak staircase to the right.” Todd Lewys / Winnipeg Free Press The formal dining room is a magnificent space.

An extra-wide doorway with more ornate oak trim then provides access to a pair of very alluring spaces: a living room and formal dining room. “A double entrance with pocket doors leads into the living room, which offers an ornamental fireplace, original hardwood floors and three windows including a large picture window on its rear wall. Like the picture window, the oak trim on the piano windows on either side of the fireplace is in pristine condition.

” Then, there’s the adjacent dining room. “Another double-wide entrance links it perfectly with the living room. Once again, the woodwork is amazing around the huge side window.

And you can also see that the home was designed with extra-high baseboards, another rare feature in a Wolseley home.” Neumann notes that the next space – the kitchen – sets the home apart from others in the area. “What can you say, other than it’s huge.

A high percentage of Wolseley homes come with tight galley kitchens, but not this one. There are tons of cabinets, lots of counter space, open shelving, and even a huge window over the double sink. It’s a very functional space.

” Todd Lewys / Winnipeg Free Press There’s plenty of function to be found in the spacious kitchen. That function extends to the home’s second level, he adds. “Taking the amazing staircase upstairs feels like you’re at 529 Wellington, There’s a lovely main bath with clawfoot tub and three bedrooms.

Each bedroom is massive, and each comes with a large window.” The sumptuous staircase then leads up to the third floor, where the primary bedroom resides. “One of the things that’s notable here is how the staircase keeps its elegance with beautiful stairs and pillars – in many cases, the woodwork stops lower down.

” As should be the case, the best was saved for last, says Neumann. “The third floor’s centrepiece is a huge primary bedroom with sprawling walk-in closet that’s almost the size of two bedrooms. It also comes with a cute three-piece ensuite.

” Head downstairs, and you find more evidence of the home’s superior construction quality – a thoroughly livable lower level. “I know I said this before, but again, it’s not what you expect in a Wolseley home,” he says. There’s a living room, bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and two bedrooms.

The windows may not meet full egress, but they could easily be expanded. There’s definite potential for a rental suite with its separate entrance.” Monday mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week.

He adds that the character-filled home comes loaded with a host of other great features. “There’s lots of yard space, stunning perennial gardens, and a wonderful double detached garage with mezzanine. All the knob and tube has been removed, not a small job for a home this size.

” The sprawling home is a must see, says Neumann. Todd Lewys / Winnipeg Free Press The quality - and artistry - of the woodwork is off the charts in the foyer and in and around the grand staircase. “As Wolseley homes go, it’s a cut above the rest in pretty much every way.

It’s incredible.” [email protected] 150 Canora St.
