Williamsport, Pa. — A fire that caused $100,000 damage to a local church is still under investigation, according to the state police fire marshal. Cpl.
Nathan Birth is asking anyone with information about the fire at Calvary Baptist Church on Wednesday to contact state police. The second-alarm fire broke out at the church on Washington Boulevard around 8 p.m.
Williamsport firefighters were responding to a unrelated call when they spotted flames at the church, officials say. Despite the quick response and knock-down by crews, damage to the church is estimated at $100,000, state police say. On Sunday, church members gathered on the lawn for a special service called "Up from the Ashes, a New Calvary Will Arise.
" Although significant portions of the church were not damaged by the fire, the building has not been cleared for use, according to a post on the church's Facebook page. The Muncy Baptist Church loaned enough chairs for congregants to attend Sunday's service outside, the post noted. "Together, we'll pray, sing, and affirm our faith that God is building something new out of these ashes," it read.
"This is more than a service — it's a testament to the strength, love, and unity within our congregation and the promise that god is far from done with us yet." Anyone with information about the fire can contact the state police at 570-368-5700..
