THREE KEY FACTS: A 600ml bottle of sugar-sweetened fizzy drink typically contains about 16 teaspoons of sugar. The World Health Organisation says there is clear evidence that taxes and subsidies influence buying behaviour, and this could curb consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks and help in the fight against obesity and diabetes. Professor Boyd Swinburn says if the Government is concerned about exploding hospital admissions and healthcare services creaking at the seams, it should care about a sugar tax.
