The Acolyte has been cancelled after just one season. Login or signup to continue reading The Star Wars spin-off show - which made its debut earlier in 2024 and showed the rise of the Sith about 100 years before The Phantom Menace - has been scrapped despite the first series ending on a cliffhanger. As reported by Deadline, Lucasfilm has decided not to continue with the Disney+ program after the conclusion of its first run.

The show was created, written, and directed by Leslye Headland, and followed twins Osha and Mae (both played by Amandla Stenberg), who were separated as children and believed each other had been killed. Reaction to The Acolyte was mixed, while there was some vile backlash to its inclusive cast and story featuring actors of colour and LGBTQI characters. Lucasfilm is still producing Star Wars series for Disney+, with Skeleton Crew coming on December 3.

Andor - which stars Diego Luna - will conclude in 2025 with its second and final season, while a second series of Ahsoka is also in development. Headland previously opened up on her approached to the first season, and how she took a similar approach to Breaking Bad by not leaving much on the table. She explained to Entertainment Weekly: "I remember reading that Vince Gilligan in writing and doing the first season of 'Breaking Bad' really didn't plan on, 'We're getting seven more seasons, and this is what's going to happen to Walter White'.

"It was much more, 'Here's everything we got. We're throwing everything at the wall.' And then with the pick-up, he mapped out, 'OK, here's what's going to happen over the course of however many seasons.

' "So I took that approach with this. I threw everything into season one, because who knows what's going to happen? "And then I'd say there are four to five major mysteries and plot points that have to get hit in season two, but until we get a proper pick-up, I worry that spending a lot of time in that world - especially being in a period where I've worked so long on this project that honestly I'm exhausted by it coming out - to kind of jump right into, like, 'All right, season two.'"
