Standard Bank has shown its commitment to supporting the creative sector in the country as it has pumped K15 million into the Department of Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Malawi (Unima) to support the second edition of Unima Theatre Festival scheduled for November 22 to 24 in Zomba. Speaking when presenting the money at the University Office in Zomba recently, Standard Bank Head of Brand and Marketing Tamanda Ng’ombe emphasised that they are committed to supporting the country’s development in areas such as film, music, dance and entertainment, which can create opportunities for youths. Ng’ombe said they are happy to support Unima Theatre Festival, describing it as a platform that would not only highlight talent and growth but also position Malawi as a country worth visiting and investing in.
“The festival represents a significant growth opportunity for Malawi, showcasing the nation’s rich culture,” she said. Unima Deputy Vice Chancellor Sunduzwayo Madise hailed Standard Bank for the donation and assured the bank’s management that Unima would use the donation for the intended purpose. Recently, the bank contributed K40 million to Kumbali Live concert to be held in October this year.
In another development, Unima, through the Department of Literary Studies, is running a creative writing residency under the Malawi Writing Better Project. The project is funded by Copyright Society of Malawi through Copyright Fund. The creative writing residency started yesterday and runs up to August 23 2024.
The programme has selected 17 writers and three editors..
