Friday, August 30, 2024 Stadler has unveiled its latest rail innovation, the RS ZERO, a direct upgrade from the longstanding Regio-Shuttle RS1. This new model marks a significant step forward in sustainable rail solutions, offering two environmentally conscious propulsion options: hydrogen and battery. These choices reflect a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the eco-friendliness of regional railways.

For nearly three decades, the RS1 Regio-Shuttle has been a staple in German and Czech regional rail networks, with approximately 500 units currently active. The RS ZERO not only continues this legacy of reliable service but also introduces groundbreaking green technologies into the mix. This model is designed to be versatile, catering to both electrified and non-electrified lines, which is crucial for expanding environmentally sustainable rail services across Europe.

“The Regio-Shuttle RS1 is an important part of Stadler’s history. We delivered the last vehicle to a customer 11 years ago. Now I am delighted that we start a new chapter in this success story with the RS ZERO which enables us to further expand our technological leadership in the field of alternative drive technologies,” says Peter Spuhler , Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Stadler Group.

Design-wise, the RS ZERO retains the iconic trapezoidal windows of its predecessor but modernizes its appearance with a sleek LED wing, melding tradition with a forward-looking aesthetic. It embodies a balance of old and new, ensuring that it stands out as a symbol of both continuity and innovation in rail technology. “With the RS ZERO prototype we are very proud to build the next vehicle with alternative drive technology at the Berlin site after the battery-electric FLIRT Akku,” explains Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler Germany .

“Thanks to our technological openness, we can always offer our customers the right vehicle and make an important contribution to the transport transition.” The rail vehicle is designed to cater to a range of needs, offering configurations from single to double units with capacities ranging from 70 to 150 passengers. Accessibility is a key feature, with low-entry heights and spacious, barrier-free interiors making it ideal for all passengers, including those with limited mobility.

“Our aim was to develop a particularly lightweight vehicle that enables emission-free operation on secondary routes,” emphasises Dr Ansgar Brockmeyer , Executive Vice President Marketing & Sales of the Stadler Group. “With the RS ZERO, we are offering our customers a train that combines efficiency with maximum comfort and provides the best possible accessibility for all passengers.” Presented in Berlin, the prototype RS ZERO showcases its adaptability with a hydrogen-powered single-car setup.

This model includes versatile spaces for bicycles, strollers, and large luggage, along with various seating zones designed for comfort and privacy. The emphasis on sustainable materials is evident in its construction, with features like eco-friendly flooring made from renewable resources and wall panels constructed from recycled materials, highlighting Stadler’s commitment to environmental stewardship..
