St. Mary’s Lutheran Church, 2001 80th St., is hosting a free concert 2 p.

m. Sunday in honor of the church’s 150th anniversary. Everyone is welcome to the “A Future With Hope” concert, which will feature performances by the St.



Mary’s Adult Choir, Youth Choir, the Praise and Worship Band, and the church’s Jubilate! Handbell Choir. A special feature is the world premiere of the hymn “Singing Promise on the Way,” written for St. Mary’s sesquicentennial anniversary by Brian Schoettler and the Rev.

Martin Seltz. Schoettler will also perform other organ selections. In September, Schoettler played an organ recital at the church as part of the 150th anniversary celebration.

In August, Schoettler played the organ with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival. Sjoerdsma Richard D. Sjoerdsma, a professor emeritus at Carthage College, organized Sunday’s concert.

He was a faculty member in Carthage’s music department for 39 years and taught courses such as studio voice, opera and vocal literature and diction. After the Sunday concert, everyone is invited to a free reception. The church hosted a 1.

5-mile walk/run event on Oct. 6 in Petrifying Springs Park. “Ninety members, along with friends and including ‘fur friends,’ were able to enjoy a beautiful fall day at the park,” event organizers said.

With donations from Thrivent Financial, St. Mary’s Lutheran Church Endowment Foundation and Costco, event organizers were able to supply breakfast bars.
