Thursday, August 29, 2024 Sri Lanka, beginning in October, will introduce a 30-day tourist visa free of charge for citizens of 35 countries, including major source markets such as the US, UK, and France. This policy is part of a six-month trial program designed to stimulate Sri Lanka’s tourism industry by making it more accessible to international visitors. Currently, tourists are required to pay $50 for a visa, making this new initiative a significant incentive, especially as it aligns with the peak tourist season from December to mid-April.

The program is expected to attract a larger influx of visitors, helping to revitalize the sector after recent global travel disruptions. As of now, Sri Lanka has welcomed approximately 1.3 million tourists in 2024, with tourism revenue exceeding $1.

5 billion in the first half of the year—a remarkable 78% increase compared to the same period last year. The government is optimistic that this free visa initiative will help the country reach its goal of attracting around 2.5 million tourist visits by the end of the year.

In addition to the increased accessibility, Sri Lanka is enhancing its tourism offerings by promoting cultural experiences, pristine beaches, and eco-tourism. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority has identified India and the UK as the leading source markets, with these countries contributing significantly to the overall growth. The new visa policy is expected to further strengthen these markets while attracting more visitors from other eligible countries, thereby diversifying the tourist base.

Moreover, Sri Lanka is also focusing on improving infrastructure, such as upgrading airports and enhancing public transportation, to ensure a seamless travel experience for international visitors. The government is working closely with the hospitality sector to offer a range of accommodations, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly options, to cater to the diverse needs of tourists. By introducing the free visa policy, Sri Lanka aims not only to boost visitor numbers but also to position itself as a premier travel destination in South Asia, offering a unique blend of cultural richness, natural beauty, and hospitality.

The success of this initiative could pave the way for its extension or even the introduction of more long-term policies to support the sustainable growth of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry..
