Tweet Facebook Mail A "spiritual scam" is targeting elderly women with Asian-ethnic backgrounds in NSW, police have warned. The scammers generally target older Chinese women by exploiting cultural fears and convincing them that their families are at risk of drawing in spirits, or at risk of great danger. They then allegedly convince them to exchange luxury items or money for blessed items that would keep the spirits and/or danger away.

READ MORE: Search under way for woman, 79, missing from Perth care facility Two reports have been filed to police in relation to the scam. In one alleged instance, a 76-year-old woman was approached on Evaline Street in Campsie by a 49-year-old woman at 8.30am on September 25.



The woman allegedly told the 76-year-old that her daughter will be seriously injured and her wealth must be blessed to prevent the injury. The woman returned home with three women - the alleged scammers - and exchanged an amount of cash and jewellery for a bag of rice and water, which were referred to as "blessed" by the women. In an earlier alleged incident, a 71-year-old woman was approached on John Street in Cabramatta on May 8.
