Stamford College Old Boys endured the tough afternoon they had expected after being beaten 64-13 by Leighton Buzzard on Saturday. They faced a strong home side who have claimed bonus points in all of their Counties 3 Midlands East (South) games so far this season in the first-ever encounter between the two clubs. Old Boys have been hit with a long injury list in the opening month of the season and have several players sidelined, including captain Jamie Jenkins.
However, that didn't stop a spirited Stamford side from putting in a performance to be proud of against a team that was playing Counties One rugby last season. The game got off to an unpleasant start as Tiago Rodrigues suffered a facial injury after just two minutes and was replaced by Mark Edwards in the back row. College were the dominant side in the opening stages, keeping the home side in their own half and applying pressure to the Buzzard attack.
This forced the home side to make mistakes and it wasn't long before a penalty was awarded in front of the posts and Carl Brierley-Lewis comfortably slotted home the opening three points. Unfortunately, these were College's only points of the half as it woke the home side up and they ran in two quick tries which were converted to make the score 14-3 after 30 minutes. Leighton added another three tries in the final 10 minutes of the first half for an interval advantage of 33-3 to the home side.
