Tuesday, August 27, 2024 Southwest Airlines is taking a bold step into new territory by introducing its first-ever overnight flights, marking a significant shift in the carrier’s 53-year history. Starting on February 13, 2025, five routes will offer these overnight services, with passengers arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day. In its latest schedule update, Southwest revealed that another 10 routes would soon follow suit, with even more on the horizon.

This development signals a new chapter for the airline, known for its no-frills approach, providing the latest updates as of August 27. Despite its longstanding absence from the overnight flight market, Southwest has a history of early morning departures and late-night arrivals, often as early as 5:00 AM or as late as 1:00 AM. The airline’s inability to offer overnight services in the past was largely due to its outdated reservation system, which was finally upgraded in 2017.

Now, seven years later, the introduction of overnight flights may be influenced by the interests of new shareholders eager to explore untapped opportunities. Southwest’s new overnight service will include several major cities. The initial list of cities gaining red-eye flights includes Atlanta, Chicago Midway, Denver, Houston Hobby, Sacramento, and San Diego.

The shortest of these overnight routes will be the flight from Los Angeles to Houston Hobby, covering 1,208 nautical miles (2,237 km). Here’s a glimpse of the planned schedule, with all times in local time: A notable highlight is the reinstatement of the Sacramento-Baltimore route, which Southwest previously served from August 2016 to August 2020. The route will resume on March 6, 2025, after a nearly five-year hiatus, becoming Southwest’s longest overnight flight at 2,081 nautical miles (3,854 km).

Previously, flights on this route would depart California around 6:00 AM and reach Maryland by 2:05 PM local time, with the return leg leaving Baltimore at 1:20 PM and landing in Sacramento by 3:50 PM. Under the new schedule, flights will vary throughout the week: Monday, Thursday, and Friday departures from Baltimore will be at 9:25 AM; Tuesday and Wednesday flights will leave at 11:15 AM; Sunday flights will depart at 1:05 PM, and Saturday departures will be at 8:15 PM. The return overnight flight will leave Sacramento at 9:55 PM, arriving in Baltimore at 5:50 AM the following day.

As of now, Southwest plans to operate 15 overnight routes. The first five routes set to launch on February 13 include: With these new overnight flights, Southwest Airlines is poised to enhance its service offerings, tapping into the growing demand for flexible travel options. This strategic expansion not only meets evolving passenger needs but also positions Southwest to capitalize on new opportunities in the competitive airline industry.
