Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save Southside High School's three volleyball seniors prepared statements that the host of Thursday's Senior Night read before the Sharks' non-district contest against Comeaux. Joli Nelson, Camden Begnaud and Bailey Byerley's career highlight wasn't the same word-for-word, but it all pertained to one event: the Sharks' appearance at the LHSAA state tournament three years ago.

"They have put it on themselves to make it back to the Cajundome," said interim coach Nick Hunt, who stepped in this season for Julie Dawson (medical leave). "That's the goal. We've been on a good winning streak, but we have some work to do.

" In 2021, the fifth-seeded Sharks upset No. 4 Dutchtown in the quarterfinals of the Division I state tournament before falling to No. 1 Dominican.

Southside (18-6), which is No. 13 in the Division I power ratings, defeated Comeaux 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 to win its eighth out of the last nine matches. The only loss was to Division II No.

2 Sam Houston (35-5). "We started out with some growing pains and played some hard teams like St. Thomas More," Hunt said.

"We usually peak around October because we don't train as hard in the summer when we give them some time off. We're starting to really put pieces together to make things happen." Southside reeled off 9 straight points in the first set to move ahead 2.
