Pune: Securing a permanent driving licence may soon get tougher as Aritificial Intelligence (AI) will determine if a permit seeker has passed the test. Three automated driving test tracks (ADTT) are expected in the city by early next year, while another ADTT is coming up at the Dive Ghat facility of the Pune regional transport office (RTO), which conducts the fitness tests for commercial vehicles. "Presently, driving tests for two- and four-wheelers are held at the RTO's Alandi Road facility and the IDTR (Institute of Driving Training and Research) in Bhosari.
The Dive Ghat facility, located in Saswad, caters to vehicle fitness tests, which include brake tests as well," Pune's deputy regional transport officer Swapnil Bhosle told TOI. "Three new ADTTs are coming up in Alandi Road, Hadapsar, and Saswad, and in these, the driving tests and the licence seeker's pass or fail status will be determined using AI with minimal human intervention," Bhosle added. With the help of AI-enabled cameras and sensors, an RTO inspector would not have to sit beside the examinee during a four-wheeler driving test, which includes driving the vehicle in the shape of the number 8.
"Presently, RTO inspectors keep a watch on whether the examinee is doing things right, and based on the inspector's assessment, the examinee is granted a licence or rejected. This system will either be removed completely or be at minimum in these ADTTs," another official said. The sensors and AI-enabled cameras would inste.
