Solano County Transit announced on Wednesday the successful completion of Phase One of the Sereno Transit Center Beautification Project — a $1.2 billion initiative, multi-year clean-up effort to remove trash, create jobs, and engage communities to revitalize public spaces. The first phase of the Clean California Grant, first received in October, focused on custom murals by local artists enhancing the drivers’ building and surrounding utility boxes.
The mural artwork by local artist Melissa Penny (Malis Bee) and her assistants “The Hive”, includes SolTrans buses, regular riders and a mural of butterflies all painted by local women from the community. The project is far from over. Starting later this month, Phase Two will bring more additions that aims to be completed by December.
These additions feature landscaping aimed at enhancing natural beauty, alongside the installation of electrical systems for improved lighting solutions. Solar-powered lighting will be integrated into four shelters, promoting sustainable energy practices. Additionally, 11 new pathway lights and four inground lights will be installed to enhance visibility and safety.
The project also involves the construction of a shade structure, ensuring comfort and protection from the elements for all riders. SolTrans also announced this week the return of all youth aged 18 and under can ride its routes for free. The coverage area comes in Vallejo and Benicia.
Routes 15 and 17 align with Benicia Middle and High School bell schedules. Express Lines will connect students to Solano Community College in Fairfield. “The Youth Ride Free Pilot Program aims to eliminate the financial barriers associated with school commutes for our young riders and their families,” said Beth Kranda, Executive Director of SolTrans.
“By providing free bus rides, we’re not only easing their journey to school but also nurturing a future generation of dedicated transit users. We’ve seen encouraging participation from youth over the summer, and we’re excited to see how this program will support students as the school year begins.” Students simply need to board any SolTrans bus and inform the driver that they are a student or youth.
No fare or special pass is required. Youth are eligible to ride all SolTrans Local and Express services anytime; the program is not limited to travel to and from school. Detailed route maps and schedules can be found on the SolTrans website, SolTrans.
