AN SNP MP has welcomed a new addition to the family with the birth of a baby boy. The childhood sweethearts got married at the Biggar Kirk, South Lanarkshire in August last year. Six months later the couple announced they would be expecting their first baby together in the summer. And after welcoming him into the world three days ago, they said they are now "completely in love" with their son.

Ms McAllan is expected to return to her ministerial role in March 2025, with Gillian Martin covering the role in her absence. She became only the second cabinet secretary in Scottish history to take maternity leave after Kate Forbes did in August 2022 .

The former finance secretary became the first when she took maternity leave after giving birth to her daughter Naomi. Who is Mairi McAllan? MAIRI McAllan is an SNP politician serving as Cabinet Secretary for Wellbeing Economy, Net Zero and Energy since the beginning of 2024. She is also the Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Fair Work and Culture.

From 2023 until 2024, Ms McAllan served as Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Net Zero and Just Transition. She became the economy secretary in February after Neil Gray was appointed as health secretary when Michael Matheson resigned. Before that, Ms McAllan was the Minister for Environment, Biodiversity and Land Reform for two years from 2021 until 2023.

After announcing her pregnancy, Mr Yousaf wished her the best on "the fantastic news". He said: “I want to offer my very best wishes and congratulations to Mairi, Iain, and their family on this fantastic news, I am incredibly happy for them all. “I am pleased Mairi has agreed to remain cabinet secretary for wellbeing economy, net zero and energy while on leave, and take up her duties again upon her return after spending some treasured time with the exciting new addition to her family.

” Ms McAllan announced her pregnancy back in February, adding that the then-First Minister Humza Yousaf had been "excellent" with her when she shared the news. At the time, she said: "My husband Iain and I are delighted that we are expecting our first child in the summer, and very much look forward to welcoming this new addition to our family." Speaking to The Sunday Mail, she added: “There was only so much longer I could hold in my stomach at work before letting people know.

“We are nearly five months on so there is not long to go before the baby is with us.
