Saturday, August 24, 2024 Sky Lagoon, Iceland’s breathtaking oceanfront geothermal lagoon, proudly unveils Skjól, a significant expansion of the Turf House that reimagines traditional Icelandic bathing rituals. Officially launching on August 22, 2024, this enhanced experience invites both Icelanders and visitors to embark on a wellness journey deeply rooted in the island’s rich cultural heritage, paying tribute to ancient practices. “Skjól, in essence, is an invitation to partake in a ritual that is as ancient as the land itself,” says Helga Albertsdottir, Managing Director, Sky Lagoon .

“Offering an inclusive experience for all guests that is both uniquely Icelandic and universally appealing, Sky Lagoon honors the past while offering a sanctuary for the present.” Guests are taken on a transformative adventure, where every aspect of design and architecture is intricately inspired by Iceland’s natural landscape. Skjól, now a central feature for all guests, encourages a profound connection with Iceland’s raw elements.

The expansion also introduces Ylur, a second sauna boasting Iceland’s largest single-pane glass window with a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, a new ritual called Saft offers a traditional elixir infused with krækiber (crowberries) that flourish in the lava fields. “For Icelandic people, Skjól is more than just a word; it’s a shelter from the storm and a moment of peace in the hectic rhythm of life,” adds Albertsdottir .

“It provides a sanctuary for all guests to experience while they are on their Sky Lagoon journey.” Sky Lagoon, operated by Pursuit, is located in Kársnes Harbour, Kópavogur, just minutes from Reykjavik. The lagoon features a 70-meter (230 ft) infinity edge, providing guests with awe-inspiring views of sunsets, the Northern Lights, and dark skies.

The new Skjól Ritual and expanded Turf House are set to open on August 22, 2024.
