The golds, oranges and reds of autumn are spreading across the British countryside. With this year predicted to bring spectacular displays thanks to a wet spring and cool summer, now’s the time to make the most of the mild weather and seasonal scenery. Market towns offer comfortable, cosy bases from which to head on soft, or serious, rambles.

Knaresborough is built beside a gorge on the River Nidd, and it’s striking viaduct is reflected in the boating area below.



You’ll find characterful cottages and pubs along its streets and independent shops on the market square. Knaresborough Castle, which is now a musuem, has a layered past that includes periods as a military fortress, a residence of King Edward II, a Royalist stronghold and a courthouse/prison. Elsewhere, Mother Shipton’s Cave is the former dwelling of a supposed prophetess born in 1488.

From the castle, join a two-mile loop to Conyngham Hall. Along the way, there’s a lovely stroll through woodland. Alternatively, try a seven-mile hike through Nidd Gorge woodland to Nidd Viaduct, along part of the Nidderdale Greenway, and through Old Bilton.
