The Today host told Simone she was 'thrilled' to have her live in the studio and said to her: 'Can I be honest? I'm having a moment looking at you right now because I remembered sitting with you in Rio, all those years ago.

You were just a kid, we did not know how to pronounce your name!' 'You are sitting here today 27 years old, the most decorated gymnast of all time. Have you had a moment to reflect on what this means?' Hoda then asked her. Simone replied: 'Not completely and I don't think I will until one day I decide to retire.

But yesterday, once we got back to the village, I looked at Jordan and I just started bawling my eyes out and she was like, "I knew it was going to happen, I just didn't know when." 'I think I was so full of emotion and I finally released all of that. I was so proud, happy, bittersweet that the journey is over.

It's so crazy, it happened so quick, my third Olympics,' the Team USA athlete added. Hoda went on to tell Simone that she was 'so proud' of her for being so open about the importance of self care and asked her to elaborate what that means for her. 'It meant seeing my therapist pretty routinely,' Simone explained.

'So I saw her about three or four times throughout this whole entire process, and it didn't matter if it was before, all-around, or after qualifications. I went back to the village and then I got on a call with her and did her therapy sessions because that's routine for me now.' 'It just gave me the confidence.

And really, we do a lot of visualizations before meets, so I feel comfortable and confident enough to compete. But since it's part of my daily routine, we don't want to stop that just because I'm halfway across the world,' Simone added. Hoda later shared a screenshot from the FaceTime call on her Instagram page Simone grinned from ear-to-ear as she told Hoda that having children is definitely in her future Hoda's daughters Hope and Haley have been supporting Team USA while their mom works in Paris Hoda then told her that she can 'easily picture' Simone as a mom, and asked her if she and her husband, Jonathan Owens, have thought about that phase of her life yet.

'Yes, me and Jonathan always talk about kids, and he would have had them yesterday if he could have. Obviously we both have goals that we want to achieve before we start a family. But, yes, that's definitely in our future,' she revealed.

When Hoda asked Simone how she would like to be remembered in the context of gymnastics, she replied: 'Someone who loved the sport, had fun doing it and just was authentically herself.' Hoda finished up the interview by presenting the athlete with a bouquet of French fries before telling her: 'Simone, this has been a beautiful, beautiful run. I have loved every minute of covering you at these Olympic games.

'If this is the last one, it's been a great ride. And if it's not, we'll see you in LA! I'm turning 60, so let's figure this out, okay!'
