The Silent Hill series by Konami is a pillar of survival horror. Beginning in 1999, the franchise has earned a fanbase through eight main instalments, with the last main title being 2012’s Silent Hill: Downpour. So when the announcement came that the classic Silent Hill 2 (released in 2001) would get a full-fledged remake, fans were excited.

However, there were some concerns about the developer chosen for this project, Bloober Team. While they are known for their experience in horror titles, the Polish developer has also had some misses. Therefore, I wondered if they could truly deliver on the expectations that come with such a massive title.

But after spending a few hours with the Silent Hill 2 remake for this ongoing review, I’m happy to report that Bloober Team seems to have done a commendable job in not only paying homage to the original’s legacy, but also adding enough polish to make it an enjoyable modern experience. If you haven’t watched the trailers or gameplay footage yet, the first thing you’ll notice when you boot up Silent Hill 2 is its graphical fidelity. Since it’s developed in Unreal Engine 5, the visuals are realistic and detailed.

The environment also has a decent level of detail, but keep in mind that this also means the game demands some hefty hardware to run smoothly . The remake is faithful to the original storyline. Like before, you play as James Sunderland, who arrives in the eerie town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his decea.
