Pune: Renowned Gandhian and social worker Shobhana Ranade passed away due to old age in Pune on Sunday. She was 99. Ranade devoted her life to working for destitute women and children.

She was conferred Padma Bhushan , the third highest civilian award, for her contribution in the social field in 2001. Born on October 26, 1924, she met Mahatma Gandhi when he was at Pune's Aga Khan Palace when she was 18. It turned out to be a turning point in her life.



Impressed by Gandhi's ideology, she started helping women and children. She worked with Vinoba Bhave and walked with him in the march in Assam's Lakhimpur in 1955. She also actively participated in Ganga Bachao Abhiyan, a social campaign to make the Ganga pollution-free.

In 1979, she took the lead in establishing the Gandhi National Memorial Society and training institute in Aga Khan Palace. She was also the trustee of Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust.
