Welp, the holidays are officially over and we're now in a brand spanky new year of hope and optimism — which lasted for about 5 hours before I turned on the news and realized it's likely to be another year of division, despair and chaos. Yay.

But at least I had an absolutely terrific holiday season (note: insert sarcasm here). They say it's better to give than receive — but this year, I handed out a gift I didn't really want to give, and no one seemed especially joyous or thankful to have received it. Clearly, everyone I know are a bunch of ungrateful jerks.



Shane Brown If you happened to read my column a couple of weeks back, you'll know my holidays started with a rousing dose of panic. After having agreed to DJ a large charity dance for a fledgling nonprofit, my trusty laptop computer (with all my DJ software and music) crashed hard on me during a gig. It turned out it was overheating because of a faulty heat sink, which in turn caused my battery to malform and melt.

A replacement battery was 10 days out, and the gig was less than a week away. My best solution was to order a new Macbook and put all my faith and the future of this gig into the hands of UPS during the busiest delivery week of the year. I even checked to see if it'd be faster to drive to the nearest Apple store in Madison or Chicago to get one, but the estimated ETA was the same.
