Sekondi-Takoradi is buzzing with excitement as over 30 masquerade groups prepare to dazzle crowds with their craft during the Christmas season. Known for its spectacular masquerade carnivals, the twin city has become a top tourist destination in Ghana, drawing thousands of visitors annually. This year, the anticipation is even higher as the city’s masquerade groups report significant growth in membership, a testament to the increasing popularity of the event.

The masquerade carnival, a highlight of the festive season, has seen a rise in participation, with some groups experiencing remarkable increases in their numbers. One group member shared, “This is the time of the year when everyone knows the Ankos or masquerade carnival is happening in Takoradi. Thousands of people travel from all over to experience the excitement.



Our group has grown from about 4,300 last year to nearly 4,800 this year. It’s incredible! The whole town is buzzing, and if you’re not here, you’re missing out.” Behind the grandeur of the carnival lies the intricate craftsmanship of the costumes, which change every year to maintain the competitive spirit.

Groups work in secrecy to keep their designs under wraps until the big reveal. “When it comes to fashion, our Unique Group stands out. The intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and meticulous craftsmanship are unmatched,” said one member, proudly highlighting the group’s distinctive style.
