Summary Over $500 million in grants awarded by US Department of Transportation to modernize airports in 47 states. Significant funding allocated for SeaTac, Kailua/Kona, and other airports for structural upgrades and safety enhancements. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Infrastructure Grants program aims to allocate a total of $15 billion to airports nationwide.

Several US airports are set to receive an infrastructure boost as the government hands out more than $500 million in grants. The funding is part of a larger project to develop and maintain airport infrastructure in the country. Many airports have already completed projects funded by this scheme, while a new set of airports, including SeaTac, will receive money now.

Over $500 million in grants The US Department of Transportation is awarding $566.4 million via 296 grants in 47 states to modernize airports in the country. Seattle-Tacoma International in Washington will receive a significant chunk of that amount, $45.

4 million. This money will be used to fund structural, seismic, and building system upgrades to Concourse S to meet design standards. US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg commented, “As Americans fly in record numbers, the Biden-Harris Administration is improving our nation’s airports to make travel more convenient for passengers.

The funding we’re announcing today, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will help airports across the country make needed improvements to ensure safety, efficiency and sustainability for years to come.” Which other airports will receive funding? While SeaTac will receive a large amount for its development, another airport will receive even more: Kailua/Kona Ellison Onizuka Kona International at Keahole, Hawaii ($49.6 million).

This money will be used to fund the rehabilitation of Runway 17/35 to enhance safety. Other airports on the list include: $43.3 million at Charlotte/Douglas International in North Carolina (construction of a deicing pad, taxiways, aircraft parking areas, grading and drainage, lighting, and signage to meet current FAA standards) $34.

6 million to Louisville Muhammad Ali International in Kentucky (expanding the existing terminal by 31,049 square feet) $20.6 million to Harry Reid International in Las Vegas, Nevada (replacing the elevators to improve safety and enhance Americans with Disabilities Act compliance) $20.1 million to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International in Georgia (funding the rehabilitation of taxiways and taxi lanes to improve safety) $18.

2 million to Sacramento International in California (reconstruction of a pedestrian walkway) $13.5 million to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International in Louisiana (funding a new people mover system for the terminal to move passengers through the airport more efficiently) $8.2 million to Moline Quad Cities International in Illinois (expansion of the existing terminal by 14,116 square feet) Bipartisan Infrastructure Law The funding is part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program in which $15 billion total of AIG funding has been allocated to airports across the country.

This, in turn, is part of the $25 billion total included in the law for the development of airport and air traffic control infrastructure. So far, around $9 billion has been spent on modernizing many airports. In fact, around half of the 3,000 airports in the US have received grants under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Some of the airports that have benefitted from the scheme so far include Asheville Regional in North Carolina ($4.3 million), Albuquerque International Sunport in New Mexico ($8.4 million), and San Diego International in California ($24.
