A search will resume for the remaining person missing off the coast of Sicily , where Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht capsized on Monday. Five bodies were recovered from the wreckage yesterday and four of them were brought ashore before divers had to suspend the operation as they struggled to reach deep inside. The discoveries bring the total number of confirmed dead to six, after the remains of the boat’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, were discovered hours after the tragedy.

More than 76 hours have passed since a small waterspout – a type of tornado – spun over the island in Italy , likely causing the vessel to sink. 15h ago Two more bodies recovered by rescue divers 17h ago Two bodies have been found in ship’s wreckage 22h ago Rescuers using underwater robots to access yacht 23h ago Freak wave could have flooded yacht – reports More than 76 hours have passed since the Bayesian superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily. Here is everything you need to know about the latest developments: Italian divers found the bodies of five of the six people missing Four bodies were brought ashore in Porticello, while a fifth one remains inside the wreckage The identities of those recovered have not been confirmed, but British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among those missing A sixth person remains unaccounted for The search will resume today Searches have wrapped up for the day and will resume tomorrow, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency Salvatore Cocina has confirmed.

It is just after 8.30pm in Italy and teams were spotted packing up equipment at the port in the village of Porticello. Five bodies have been recovered from the wreck throughout the day, which means one person remains missing, Cocina adds.

Britain’s investigation into the sinking of Mike Lynch’s superyacht has started. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) will look to determine the causes and circumstances of the incident. A team of four MAIB inspectors have been in Porticello today to carry out a ‘preliminary assessment’, but they are not involved in the search and rescue.

‘The MAIB is investigating the foundering of the UK registered large yacht Bayesian off the northern coast of Sicily on August 19, 2024,’ a statement read. ‘It would not be appropriate for the MAIB to comment further while the investigation is ongoing. ‘ It comes as five bodies have been discovered today, bringing the number of confirmed deaths to six.

The head of Sicily’s civil protection agency Salvatore Cocina has confirmed that a fifth body has been found in the wreck of the Bayesian. He said that four bodies have been recovered and that efforts to bring a fifth to shore are ‘ongoing’. This leaves one person of the six, who were missing, that teams were looking for.

Four bodies have been found in the search for the six missing people after the Bayesian capsized in the early hours of Monday. As their identities remain unconfirmed, here is a reminder of who rescuers are searching for: Mike Lynch – British tech entrepreneur who co-founded Cambridge Neurodynamics and co-founded the firm Autonomy Hannah Lynch – an 18-year-old student and Mike Lunch’s daughter Jonathan Bloomer – chair of Morgan Stanley Bank International Judy Bloomer – wife of Jonathan Bloomer Chris Morvillo – partner at the law firm Clifford Chance Neda Morvillo – a jewellery designer and wife of Chris Morvillo Four body bags were brought to the port in Porticello, at the Sicilian shore. Dozens of personnel from the Italian Coastguard and local fire service lined the port moments after it was confirmed that the remains of two more people were found.

Ambulances were seen taking them away, escorted by police cars. Authorities have still not confirmed the identities of those recovered today. Two more bodies have been found in the search for survivors of the Bayesian, bringing the total number of victims recovered today to four.

So far, the remains of four out of six people have been pulled out from the water near the shipwreck, off the coast of Sicily. This means two other people remain trapped underwater. The Italian Coastguard previously did not rule out the possibility that those missing, including tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

Among those also missing are Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo. The captain of the doomed Bayesian was questioned by Italian prosecutors for more than two hours, according to reports. James Cutfield, 51, was quizzed by the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office yesterday, Italian news agency ANSA reports.

Speaking to the New Zealand Herald in their homeland, his brother Mark described him as a ‘very good sailor’ and ‘very well respected’ in the Mediterranean. Magistrates are said to be questioning all the survivors as authorities worked to piece together what happened to the yacht. No one is under investigation at the moment, judicial sources have said.

The search for six people missing since a superyacht was overturned during a violent storm off the coast of Sicily now involves robots . A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard the 180-foot Bayesian turned deadly when it sank in the early hours of Monday, possibly due to a waterspout . Of the 22 aboard, 15 were rescued and three bodies have been reportedly recovered.

That leaves four unaccounted for. Read more here. A body appeared to be pulled from the water near the site of the sunken Bayesian yacht on Wednesday afternoon. A green body bag was taken back to the port of Porticello where dozens of emergency services staff were waiting. Several boats have left the port of Porticello to go to the site of the sinking.

They left the port at the same time shortly before 3.30pm on Wednesday. Divers scouring the wreck of the Bayesian yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily have found the bodies of two of the six passengers who were missing, a source has told Reuters.

The boat, owned by the wife of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was carrying 22 passengers and crew and was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it capsized during a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday. One of the bodies has been described as a ‘heavily built man’, according to the news agency. Details have not yet been given of about the second body.

Each of the 15 survivors of the Bayesian shipwreck declined the offer of psychological support for their ordeal, it has been reported. Salvo Cocina, president of the Civil Protection Agency in Sicily, told MailOnline: ‘We wanted to make sure that everyone was offered every kind of help they might need, but no-one from the passengers or the crew accepted counselling.’ He added that the search operation is still underway, saying ‘we don’t differentiate between rescue and recovery in these circumstances, because the people are still in the boat’.

Mr Cocina went on: ‘The divers have not yet reached the cabins, so we have not yet given up hope that there may be air pockets in their keeping them alive.’ Divers have reached the area where the cabins are located, Corriere Della Sera is reporting. The spaces inside the vessel are extremely narrow and difficult to manoeuvre in, while floating debris has also made it ‘difficult to fully explore the cabins’, the Italian newspaper adds.

Divers from the local fire service were seen entering the water with torches attached to their headgear at the site of the shipwreck on Wednesday afternoon. A police boat and divers were also seen entering the water. The boats spent a short time at the scene before heading back to the nearby port.

A helicopter hovered overhead. The sinking of the superyacht was likely caused by a water spout in a ‘black swan’ event, a maritime expert has said. Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the Bayesian had been the victim of freak weather conditions.

‘So, we’ve got this high impact, but low probability event. And even outside of the maritime industry, all industries struggle with the black swan events,’ he said. A ‘black swan’ event refers to an unforeseen occurrence that typically has extreme consequences.

Mr Schanck went on: ‘The authorities, I’ve got faith, will get to the bottom of that because there are the eyewitness accounts from the shore and the other vessels. ‘There are obviously survivors from the vessel, (and) the wreckage is also intact on the seabed. So, we’ll be able to use those three sources to really get to the bottom of what has happened.

He said: ‘To my knowledge, there is only one body that has been found. The others are still missing.

‘We have given the survivors this information. But they are talking and crying all the time because they have realised that there is little hope of finding their friends alive.’ To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a webbrowser that supports HTML5video A British mother who was onboard the Bayesian ship was sleeping on the deck with her daughter when the storm hit the yacht, a doctor has said.

Head of paediatric care at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo, Dr Domenico Cipolla, said Charlotte Golunski, a partner at venture capitalist firm Invoke Capital, was asleep when a ‘ waterspout ’ tore through the sea in the early hours of Monday morning, prompting the boat to sink. Charlotte and her daughter were rescued along with 15 others. Six other passengers, including Mike Lynch and Jonathan Bloomer, remain missing.

Dr Cipolla told Sky News : ‘She said that she was sleeping with the child on deck while her husband was a little further away in another part of the boat and she felt the oscillations of the ship,” Dr Domenico Cipolla said. ‘In an instant it was dark and she found herself in the water in just a few minutes. She said she tried to hold on to the child but lost the child from her grip for three seconds.

‘She then managed to catch her in the water.’ MORE : World’s worst thief puts stealing on hold to read a book MORE : The underwater robots used by rescuers in sunken yacht search MORE : EasyJet crew ‘thrown into walls’ after plane hit by turbulence on London flight Sign Up for News Updates Get your need-to-knowlatest news, feel-good stories, analysis and more Privacy Policy.
