TW: Mention of sexual assault, physical assault, rape, molestation, murder, porn and Indian men’s behavior. The horrific Kolkata Rape-Murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital shook the conscience of the entire nation but not the desi men. According to Quint’s report , web search for the doctor’s name, along with search keywords like (doctor’s name) + rape photo and (doctor’s name) + rape video, saw a spike of a whopping 160-190% on Google.

There was a huge spike in search for the aforementioned keywords between 17 and 20 August. The publication reports that on one of the most flocked porn sites in India, there were over 3,000 searches with the victim’s name. A post shared by The Quint (@thequint) According to data by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), in 2012 when Nirbhaya was gangraped and brutally murdered, there were about 25,000 cases of rape recorded across India.

In 2016, there was a surge in sexual assault, with 39,000 cases registered. Per a government report, one woman reported rape every 15 minutes in 2018, and in 2022 the same statistics are every 16 minutes. In 2022, there were 31,000 recorded cases of rape in India.

There was a sharp decline in reportage during the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. There’s a dedicated Wikipedia page on ‘Rape in India ’ with all the relevant data, which speaks volumes of the deep-rooted problem in the country. The page quotes NCRB’s 2021 statistics, stating that Rajasthan reported the highest number of cases, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Among metro cities, Delhi was listed as having the highest incidence of rape, followed by Jaipur. Per the data, Kolkata had the least number of cases registered. For the year 2019, UTs Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep registered zero cases of rape.

A whopping 71% of rape crimes go unreported, according to the NCRB’s 2006 estimate. How much of these cases have a correlation between availability of porn is debatable but Indian men’s fetish is not up for debate. It needs to be cured.

Meanwhile, here’s how the internet reacted to the news of porn-search of the victim of the brutal Kolkata rape and murder. “We are beyond redemption,” remarked several users. “Kuch nahi hone wala iss desh ka,” quipped one.
