BROOKINGS — South Dakota State officially cut the ribbon on First Bank & Trust Arena with Thursday night's volleyball match against Kansas City. The $53 million upgrade to what was formerly known as Frost Arena marks a major milestone for Jackrabbit athletics, and the grand opening just so happened to coincide with a 13-game winning streak the volleyball team brought to the proceedings. ADVERTISEMENT So with a crowd of 2,853 on hand (the most ever to watch SDSU volleyball) and the smell of wet paint and sawdust still in the air, everything was set for an historic night for South Dakota State.

The team just had to do its part with a win, and they delivered in high-flying fashion. The Jackrabbits soared past the Kangaroos in three straight sets, winning 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19. The win bumps SDSU's record to 14-0, equaling the second-best start in program history, and 3-0 in Summit League play.

Keeping the winning streak going was important. So was sending the record crowd home happy. But the Jacks didn't let that create pressure.

Instead, they looked at Thursday's grand opening as an opportunity to be thankful for. "I sent a text to the team before the match that said no matter what happens just know how blessed we are," said sophomore setter Rylee Martin. "I was just so proud of our team.

We played with joy and did what we know how to do." With the arena buzzing after pre-game introductions, imposing middle blocker and reigning Summit League Peak Performer of the Month Sydni.
