The card was to be only used by Stevenson as a means to fund a possible escape if the net was closing in. But officers who had a marker on the card were alerted with a real time location, date and time stamp when it was used.
The 59-year-old was arrested two years ago while out jogging in the Netherlands. Prosecutors say he had orchestrated a plot to smuggle £76million worth of cocaine, hidden in banana shipments, destined to Glasgow from South America. The huge trafficking operation spanned the UK, Spain, Ecuador and the luxury Nurai Island Resort in Abu Dhabi.
The pair are understood to have been hiding out in the Netherlands together for a number of months as a massive manhunt was launched to bring him to justice. However, police are said to have hit a brick wall in trying to locate Stevenson, who is also known as 'Bull' who had previously hidden out in a flat in Amsterdam.
