Monday, September 9, 2024 São Tomé and Príncipe, located about 140 miles off the coast of Africa, is a tropical paradise that remains largely undiscovered by mass tourism. This two-island nation boasts breathtaking white sand beaches, lush mountain hikes, vibrant wildlife, and a rich cultural blend of African and Portuguese influences. Despite its beauty and appeal, only around 15,000 tourists visit the islands each year.

Often compared to the Seychelles for its idyllic scenery, São Tomé and Príncipe offers an incredible alternative for travelers seeking a more secluded destination. The country is home to vast jungles, pristine beaches, and a UNESCO biosphere on Príncipe island, often referred to as the “Galapagos of Africa.” The islands are a haven for eco-tourists, offering activities like snorkeling, birdwatching, and jungle trekking.

Rolas Island, located on the equator, offers the unique experience of standing with one foot in each hemisphere. While tourism numbers are modest, São Tomé’s tourism industry is growing, with new resorts emerging on its pristine shores. Visitors can enjoy world-class chocolate at Claudio Corallo’s plantation or try traditional local dishes like calulu, a slow-cooked fish stew.

Accessible from the UK via Lisbon, courtesy of TAP Air Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe awaits adventurous tourists looking for an unspoiled tropical escape..
