Wednesday, August 28, 2024 Sanya Tourism Board and the Pacific Asia Travel Association partner to boost sustainable tourism development in tropical coastal cities across Asia Pacific. Today, the Sanya Tourism Board and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster the sustainable development of tourism in Sanya and other tropical islands within the Asia Pacific area. This new alliance was formalized during the 2024 Tropical Coastal City Tourism Event Media Briefing on August 27, an event aligned with PATA Travel Mart 2024.

The MOU was signed by Director General Albert Yip of the Sanya Tourism Board and CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid of PATA. The partnership aims to boost mutual cooperation in cultural and tourism sectors, undertake comprehensive tourism research, promote tropical coastal tourism development, advance international tourism marketing strategies, and enhance sustainable practices. Additionally, the agreement seeks to improve the visibility of tourism agencies and elevate the global tourism status of Sanya and the wider Hainan region.



“On behalf of the Association, I am pleased to solidify our collaboration with Sanya,” said PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid . “By joining forces, we can work together to elevate tropical islands and coastal destinations as premier travel hubs. PATA is committed to assisting global destinations in identifying their distinct advantages and developing travel experiences that not only draw international tourists but also safeguard their cultural and natural heritage.

Sanya, known as China’s most emblematic tropical coastal city, boasts abundant tourism resources and strategic geographical benefits, making it a key partner for PATA’s future initiatives. Under the terms of the MOU, both organizations have pledged to collaboratively host the Tropical Coastal City Tourism Event in Sanya annually over the next three years, from 2024 to 2026. This initiative aims to broaden Sanya’s presence in the worldwide island tourism market.

Albert Yip, Director General of the Sanya Tourism Board, announced that Sanya is set to enhance its collaboration with PATA, marking the commencement of a significant three-year partnership. As part of this venture, Sanya has introduced the initiative to establish the Tropical Coastal City Tourism Alliance and will consistently host the Tropical Coastal City Tourism Event. This endeavor aims to provide a platform for tropical coastal cities around the world to exchange insights, build connectivity, and collectively work towards the revival and growth of the tropical coastal tourism sector.

Additionally, Sanya will intensify its international marketing campaigns, dedicated to showcasing the unique allure of Sanya to travelers globally. The 2024 Tropical Coastal City Tourism Event is set to be held at the China Hyatt Regency Sanya Tianli Bay in Sanya, Hainan, China, on September 4-5. Themed “The Next Wave: Shaping the Future of Tourism Marketing in Tropical Coastal Cities,” the conference will explore critical areas such as pioneering international tourism marketing strategies, empowering local communities, and driving sustainable development efforts in tropical coastal cities.

The event is designed to serve as a forum where mayors and tourism professionals from tropical coastal cities can exchange best practices and strategies, reinforcing Sanya’s position as a prominent destination for inbound international tourism in China. This gathering represents a pivotal step in enhancing collaboration and collective growth among tropical coastal cities..
