Saturday, August 31, 2024 San Diego Airport Authority opens new Terminal 1 parking garage with over 2,800 spaces, setting the stage for future expansion and enhanced traveler convenience. Earlier this week, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority marked a significant milestone with the opening of the first phase of a new parking garage at Terminal 1. This newly completed structure, part of a broader initiative to accommodate the airport’s growing passenger traffic, offers over 2,800 parking spaces, enhancing convenience for travelers.

San Diego International Airport serves as a vital hub for Southern California, especially for communities near the United States-Mexico border. The airport also plays a crucial role for many Mexican residents who cross the border to catch flights. As demand has surged in recent years, the airport has undertaken numerous improvement projects to better serve its growing clientele.

On Wednesday, the airport authority celebrated the completion of the first phase of the New Terminal 1 Parking Plaza. This initial phase introduces 2,834 parking spaces, strategically located within easy reach of both the existing Terminal 1 and the forthcoming New Terminal 1, set to open in 2025. The airport authority emphasized the project’s commitment to sustainability.

The garage features 519 spaces designated for clean vehicles, including electric, hybrid, and fuel-efficient cars. Additionally, 65 charging stations are slated to become operational by this fall. Travelers can also take advantage of a tire inflation station on the first floor, available free of charge, and luggage carts conveniently placed on all levels of the garage to enhance the passenger experience.

The parking garage is only the beginning. The second phase of construction will add another 2,396 parking spaces, over 100 additional electric vehicle charging ports, and hundreds of bicycle parking spots, further advancing the airport’s green initiatives. This summer, the U.

S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) awarded San Diego International Airport a $23.5 million grant under the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

This funding, the second-largest award in this round, will support continued improvements at the airport, ensuring it meets the demands of future travelers. As San Diego International Airport continues to evolve, these enhancements reflect a commitment to sustainability, convenience, and forward-thinking infrastructure, positioning the airport as a leading gateway for Southern California and beyond..
