The Lorain County Historical Society and the Elyria Community Partnership are inviting people for a unique tour of some of the city’s sacred landmarks, according to a news release. Beginning at 1 p.m.

Sept. 8, visitors can meet at the Lorain County History Center, 284 Washington Ave., for a special exhibit to launch the tour followed by six historic churches that will open their doors from 2-4 p.

m. for an open house experience, the release said. This event is free and open to the public.

A map will be provided and visitors may walk, drive or ride the Lorain County Transit to take a journey through time and explore the architectural and spiritual treasures found in the heart of Elyria, according to the release. Ohio Open Doors is a statewide event to promote historical architecture. During this special time every two years, building and landmark owners open their doors to the public for free tours and programs.

Ohio Open Doors is sponsored by the Ohio History Connection and partner organizations, the Ohio Arts Council, Ohio Tourism, the Ohio Travel Association and Heritage Ohio. Since the first Ohio Open Doors took place in 2016, hundreds of events have been held in nearly 200 communities throughout Ohio, the release said. “The churches featured on this tour are a testament to the history of their community and congregations,” said Kerri Broom, executive director of the Lorain County Historical Society, in the release.

“We are grateful to them for opening their doors on this special day. “Learning about the church buildings, the congregations and how both have changed over time, is a wonderful way to connect with the community and to appreciate our local history.” Mone’t Roberts, executive director of the Elyria Community Partnership, said in the release that this collaboration brings up memories from the tour last year.

“We are excited to be a part of a new experience,” Roberts said. “The churches in downtown Elyria have some of the most beautiful architecture and are gems to witness.” For questions or more information, reach out to hello@elyriatogether.
