Sunday, September 8, 2024 Kuala Lumpur: The Matta Fair has once again proven to be a crucial platform for promoting tourism, especially for the captivating regions of Sabah and Sarawak. During the event’s official opening at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Sabah’s State Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew emphasized the significance of showcasing Borneo as Malaysia’s favorite destination. Liew highlighted that the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) is leading the charge with a strong presence at the fair, supported by 33 travel agents, local artisans, and industry partners, represented by 60 booths within the Sabah Zone.

The Kopitiam-themed section offers visitors a taste of Sabah’s hospitality, featuring traditional delicacies, Tenom coffee, and refreshing Sabah tea. “Sabah’s participation in the Matta Fair underlines our commitment to providing visitors with authentic and unforgettable experiences,” Liew said. She also noted that the event serves as a gateway for travel enthusiasts to discover the beauty of Borneo.



Exclusive deals, including travel rebates of up to RM150 on Sabah travel packages, are designed to encourage more travelers to plan their adventures. Liew praised the collaborative efforts between Sabah and Sarawak in promoting the diverse attractions of Borneo, which include breathtaking landscapes, thrilling adventures, rich cultural heritage, and unique wildlife. She emphasized that by working together, both states can enhance their visibility and attract even more visitors.

“Tourism is not just about destinations; it’s about building connections and creating memories,” Liew said, emphasizing that Sabah offers an integrated experience combining the majestic peaks of Mount Kinabalu with the vibrant marine life of its oceans. Liew also commended the efforts of the Sabah Tourism Board, led by Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, for their dedication and innovative approach in showcasing Sabah at this year’s Matta Fair. The minister reaffirmed Sabah’s commitment to promoting tourism that not only showcases the state’s natural beauty but also supports local businesses and preserves cultural heritage.

Liew expressed optimism about the opportunities that lie ahead for Sabah and Sarawak, urging continued efforts to promote the region’s beauty, culture, and warm hospitality to the world. Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato’ Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who was also present, echoed Liew’s sentiments about collaboration. Other notable attendees included Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Matta President Nigel Wong, and several industry leaders, all working together to further promote Sabah and Sarawak as must-visit destinations.
