After nearly two weeks of testimony and a few hours of deliberations, a jury has reached a verdict in the case against Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty on charges of involuntary manslaughter for what was seen as her role in the accidental death. She was also charged with evidence tampering, which she was not found guilty of.
She initially faced up to three years in prison following the verdict The trial comes more than two years after Huthcins was fatally shot on the New Mexico set by Alec Baldwin. Baldwin was recently re-charged with involuntary manslaughter for firing the gun, after prosecutors initially dropped the case against him, and Gutierrez-Reed has been slammed for her “sloppy” mistake in what happened. Prosecutors claimed she missed multiple opportunities to ensure safety on the set, and eventually wound up loading a live round into the gun that Baldwin fired, which killed Hutchins, She was also accused of failing to properly check whether rounds were live or dummies twice. Gutierrez-Reed, who did not take the stand in her own defense, had a different take, with her attorneys arguing that she was working under.
