Pune: The character certificate verification department of the city police is flooded with applications after the state govt made it mandatory for members of non-teaching staff of self-financed schools to furnish the same in the wake of the Badlapur incident. Education officer, secondary, Pune Zilla Parishad, Bhausaheb Karekar, said, "Primarily, instructions have been given to conduct character verification of employees appointed through outsourcing in self-financed schools. There are around 450 self-financed schools across Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and rural areas.

The school management needs to file the character certificates of concerned employees. These certificates are necessary during school inspections. The school management should complete the character certificate process as soon as possible.

Workshops are also being planned in coordination with the police." While only contractual employees are meant to submit character certificates, some institutions and principals have instructed all staffers to submit them. An official from the character verification cell of Pune police said, "The certificate is issued after verifying whether there are any serious criminal charges against the applicant.

Information technology companies, private companies, and security guards also need to submit character verification certificates." After the Badlapur incident, the state education department issued a govt notification stating that the school management must acquire character verification certificates from non-teaching staffers, including housekeeping workers, school assistants, attendants, and peons, among others. The police official said, "Minor disputes leading to registration of a crime can cause difficulties in obtaining a job.

If a crime is registered, character certificate is denied, and there are also difficulties in obtaining passport." The police must issue a character certificate within 21 days. For this, online registration is required.

Those seeking the certificate should register at mahaonline.gov.in.

After filling in the information online, relevant information is sent to the police station concerned. The local police station checks the criminal background of the person residing in the area. The application returns to the Pune Police's character certificate verification department, where the documents are reviewed, and the certificate is issued.

Mahendra Ganpule, spokesperson, Maharashtra School Principals' Federation, said, "Character certificates are for contractual employees. However, some places have instructed everyone to obtain the certificate for safety reasons. Character certificates are being requested from drivers transporting students.

" Various documents need to be submitted to obtain character certificate. These include Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card, passport for identification, telephone bill, electricity bill for address proof, birth certificate, and school certificates for proof of date of birth..
