Jamaican Olympic discus throw gold medallist Roje Stona, was this morning greeted with loud cheers by his alma mater, Rusea's High School in Lucea, Hanover on Friday morning. Stona was attending a welcome back ceremony organised by past students, former head girl and head boy, Janet Richards from Janet Richards Foundation, and the Mayor of Montego Bay, Richard Vernon. During the ceremony, Stona addressed the students and said it was a pleasure being at his old school.

"I am really thankful that you are all celebrating what I have done, and I am sure I made you all proud. To the students, I was once in your shoes and you can find inspiration from your own story. You don't have to take everything from one person," Stona said.

"You are young, believe in yourself. There are a lot of things you may be inspired to do and interested in if you don't want to do sports. Whatever you want to do, pursue that and manifest it to the best way possible," he added.

At the Paris Olympics this summer, the 25-year-old secured the gold medal in the men's discus throw in record breaking fashion as he threw an Olympic mark of 70.00 metres on his fourth attempt. Becoming the first Jamaican to win gold in the event.

Stona represented Rusea’s under the coaching of Rodrick Myles in the Class Two boys discus throw at the Western Championships. Where he easily won the title for his school. We want to hear from you! Email us at star@gleanerjm.
