Prayagraj: The officials of the regional transport office ( RTO ) have decided to make public the registration numbers of unfit school buses . The numbers will be displayed on the department's website and other channels. The aim is to ensure that no schoolkids commute in these unfit buses , as they could be potentially accident-prone.

“We have initiated the process of publicising the list of such vehicles and want the parents to check whether the school vehicle in which their children are travelling is fit or not. Instructions have been given to the officers of the enforcement team to immediately seize these vehicles upon detection and file a report,” said ARTO administration Rajeev Chaturvedi. Chaturvedi added that “It was possible that some of these unfit buses are not plying on the roads, but we want that at least the owners should contact the RTO office and update the information so that their registration can be cancelled, and the department can update its data.

The department had in a recent survey found that out of 1,327 registered school vehicles, 376 were deemed unfit. Not only have these buses failed the fitness test, but their permits have also expired. Notices were dispatched by the RTO to the schools from where these vehicles were being operated.

In the past, there have been instances where school buses have met with accidents, and investigations unveiled that they were unfit, with incomplete fitness, permit, and pollution papers. Likewise, in many other cases, parents are often unaware of these unfit buses, and both the school management and vehicle owners conceal this information.
