RTE star Carl Mullan has opened up about his struggles with his weight and admitted that he wasn't "mentally prepared" to become a father. The 2FM host married his long-term girlfriend Aisling Mullan in April 2022 - together the pair have two kids son Daibhi and daughter Eala. Speaking to Brendan O'Connor on his show, Carl opened up about wrestling with his body image over the years, particularly since becoming a dad.

He explained that looking back he wasn't ready for how his life would change when he welcomed his first child. The Dublin native said: "I don't think I was fully mentally prepared before becoming a dad for what it would mean. "I often talk to people about the mourning of the loss of your old life.

That's probably the biggest thing I've had to try and figure out. "You realise, oh, it's gone. It is not coming back, I keep thinking it's coming back - it's not.

" The 34-year-old explained how deep rooted his relationship with his weight has become as he wants to be the best version of himself for his kids He said: "It is something that I've always struggled with. There's less time for yourself or to go to the gym, I've definitely struggled with body image and particularly in the last couple of years. "It's just feeling self-conscious about putting on weight or clothes not fitting as well as you'd like and being out and about and wanting to look good.

"But actually, a lot of it now, it's even more deep-rooted, because I want to be the best version of myself for my kids." He added: "I want to be healthy and I want to be there for them. And sometimes, just because it's so mad, you don't get to be that best version of yourself the whole time.

"It's nearly the fact that I know that just by eating healthy and exercising, I know I can be the best version of myself, creatively, and I can have more energy for my kids. "So there's nearly a guilt around when you're not eating properly because you're just running on empty. That you're going, 'But now I know I'm not being the best version of myself that I can be'.

"There's definitely an element of that public body image, but actually it's more so rooted in just me and my life at home." Carl's home life could become a staple on the station as recently he was spotted filming radio pilots with his wife for a new show featuring the the pair. Station sources say Carl and partner Aisling have been spotted in RTE recording pilot radio shows.

Bosses want to see whether the Dublin childhood sweethearts have the chemistry to wake up listeners every morning from 7am. Insiders say the idea for the new show comes from 2FM boss Dan Healy, who wants to have a married couple hosting together. It would make the pair the Irish version of British married couple Richard Madeley, 68, and Judy Finnigan, 76 , who hosted their own TV chat show from 2001 to 2009.

Healy’s been forced to come up with a revamp for 2FM Breakfast after Doireann Garrihy , 32, quit back in May and Donncha O’Callaghan , 45, left at the start of July . But Carl’s wife Aisling couldn’t be further from the glitzy world of showbiz, working as a paediatric nurse in Crumlin Hospital . However, she could be the perfect person to bounce off husband Carl every morning.
