Finding affordable rental homes in several Indian cities has become increasingly challenging due to rising living costs. Major cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi attract numerous job seekers and companies, leading to heightened demand for housing. In Mumbai, often referred to as the “City of Dreams,” the combination of a burgeoning population and a booming economy has resulted in some of the highest rental costs in the country.
Even small apartments are now priced significantly higher, making it difficult for many to find suitable housing within their budgets. This trend is exacerbated by the city’s status as a financial hub, housing major businesses and the stock exchange. One example is a one-bedroom apartment that comes with a hefty price tag.
Located in Matunga, the 1BHK apartment includes a small living room, a compact bedroom, and a kitchen. There is also a small staircase that leads up to a loft for extra storage space. And the rent is? Rs 45,000 per month.
An X user shared a screenshot of the apartment’s original video and mocked it over showing a ‘chawl’ in the name of 1BHK. “Purani chawl ko old school/old vibes bolkr 45k rent pr de rhe capitalism has commodified poverty to a next level,” the caption read. Shared on Instagram, the video’s previous caption read, “Matunga East.
