The inventor of the modern fitness craze PIlates, Joseph Pilates, was born in Germany in 1883 and placed in an internment camp through World War I. While interned he studied the movements of stray cats and developed the famous exercise routines, which he taught to his fellow inmates.
He patented 26 pieces of fitness equipment including the reformer machines used widely today.
