The Colosseum in Rome will be open at night for the first time in which some fans will be invited to experience the life of a gladiator by suiting up in armour and determining their fate in battle. To celebrate the release of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II on Thursday, guests can request to book one of two, three-hour experiences. For centuries, the Roman Colosseum has been the stage for epic battles and legendary gladiators, but never has it been open to the public at night.

As part of the experience, warriors will be greeted by the master of ceremonies who will meet guests outside the Colosseum after sunset and lead them through its portal. The group will then descend into the hypogeum, the underground chambers, and prepare for battle by choosing their gladiator type and wearing that warrior’s armour. There will also be the chance to train in the art of gladiator combat and test their courage as guests face off in a mock battle against fellow warriors.

Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and return the glory of Rome to its people.

The visit is free but there’s a catch — it’s not open to everyone. Those who.
